Dum Dum Pops® manufacturer already tasting success after switching to Miura boilers to maximize efficiency and reduce fuel costs. NEW YORK, 2007—Spangler Candy, headquartered in Bryan, Ohio has been in business for over 100 years and today manufactures over 9 million Dum Dum Pops® daily, along with over 1.5 million candy canes and over 600,000 Saf-T-Pops® per day. Generating steam for manufacturing purposes, efficiently and cost-effectively, is one of the responsibilities of Paul Gackel, PE, Director of Facilities/Utilities. So when it was time to switch out four of the company’s five firetube steam boilers, which were generating up to 900 BHP, Paul called his dealer Combustion Mechanical of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and asked them to look into current boiler technology that could support their operation, while also reducing fuel costs. “Combustion Mechanical did a lot of research and came up with Miura Boiler as the company that would satisfy our needs,” said Mr. Gackel. “So off we went to visit their North American manufacturing operations in Brantford, Canada. We were impressed.” What convinced Mr. Gackel and the team from Combustion Mechanical to select Miura was the attention to detail, the overall “heavy-dutiness” of the product and the potential for saving oil and gas costs. “We were running a pretty efficient operation, but with Miura technology, we estimated an additional 10 to 20% fuel saving,” and that really got our attention,” added Mr.Gackel. Spangler Candy switched out four of its five current boilers between Thanksgiving and Christmas relying on Industrial Contracting & Engineering in Angola, Indiana to handle the assignment. There was no down time and no production delay. By year end the four Miura Boiler EX Series 200 BHP horsepower units were operating as expected. EX Series boilers are dual fuel fired using natural gas, propane or #2 fuel oil. Depending on the model, NOx rating is available as low as 30ppm. All Miura Boilers produce steam in 5 minutes using their exclusive floating head design, a revolutionary advance that results in gas and oil savings of up to 20%. In a multiple installation (MI) Miura boilers can be turned on or off as needed, allowing Spangler to meet peak demand hours, while operating at greater efficiency throughout the day and reducing wear and tear. Miura boilers also require less space and feature an online maintenance system with a “sliding window feature” that records an event four secondsbefore it occurs, so it can be diagnosed and corrected faster. “I felt very confident that we would satisfy our needs with Miura boilers and achieve the fuel cost savings that would enhance our productivity,” added Gackel. “The first month we could test actual fuel costs ‘apples to apples’ was February 2007 (as compared to February 2006). The results suggested a savings of 14.87% on fuel costs and the additional benefit or conserving natural resources.” Gackel went on to discuss how primary pressure regulating valves (PRV) helped to make a big difference in achieving maximum efficiency. “Miura boilers can step down easily and having good control of output pressure made a big difference for us in achieving our goals. Plus, even though the Miura technology was new to our operators, they did seem to like it a lot more than our previous boiler, since with the self-diagnostics there was a lot less to go wrong.” |
