Miura Teams with Georgia Northwestern Technical College and Quick Start to Train Workers for New Boiler Manufacturing Plant

Collaboration helps fill jobs with local workers

ROCKMART, GA August 4, 2010 – When Miura Manufacturing America decided to build a 100,000 square foot boiler manufacturing facility in Rockmart, Georgia it turned to Georgia Northwestern Technical College (GNTC) and Quick Start, a unit of the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) to help train local workers in the precision welding techniques and other technical skills required to build Miura’s world-famous, energy-efficient, advanced industrial steam boilers.

To develop the program, Miura consulted with training experts from the Quick Start team and GNTC’s Economic Development Vice President, Pete McDonald. Together they designed a customized training program that encompassed core skills, job-specific training, and collaboration strategies that would enable workers to quickly fill the positions being created. Services provided by GNTC included customized industrial and organizational development training, Quick Start assistance, continuing education courses, and Georgia Work Ready profiles.

“We are pleased to work with GNTC and Quick Start in helping train and retrain the local workforce to fill manufacturing positions at our Rockmart facility,” said Mark Utzinger, President Miura Manufacturing America, Co., Ltd. “Miura realizes that it is an integral part of the local community and is committed to helping the local workforce fill positions at our growing facility through collaborations like this.”

“Bringing good jobs to Georgians is what Quick Start is all about,” said Jackie Rohosky TCSG Assistant Commissioner for Economic Development Programs and Head of Quick Start. “It’s an honor for us to be able to work with quality manufacturers like Miura Boiler to create the strategic workforce solutions they need to be successful.”

GNTC brought potential employees to the campus welding shop where their skills were evaluated and ranked to help facilitate hiring processes. GNTC also provided use of its Polk County Campus as a training facility and temporary office for the project until the construction of the Miura facility was complete.

At the core of Miura’s employee screening process was the Georgia Work Ready program.  The program provides workers with a Work Ready Certificate that assesses their real-world skills and documents their “work readiness.”

“The Georgia Work Ready assessment has been a real benefit to us,” added Utzinger. “It allows us to build the right workforce by acquiring the local talent we need to grow and prosper.  Being able to see a potential employee’s assessment score allows us to better determine whether a candidate can handle the job’s responsibilities and determine additional training needs if hired.”

“The way the initial phase of the project worked was ideal,” said McDonald “There is now an ongoing collaboration between our academic programs and Miura that is an incredible benefit to both parties.”

As the Miura and GNTC program continues to grow, GNTC will help identify qualified graduates to fill open and newly created positions while providing college and short-term courses to meet Miura’s growing need for skilled workers.
