World-Class Hospital Maximizes Energy Efficiency, While Reducing
Fuel Costs and Conserving Resources in a Drought-Stricken Area.
NEW YORK, 2008—Duke Raleigh Hospital is a member of the Duke University Health System. The hospital prides itself on offering high-quality diagnostic, therapeutic, rehabilitation, prevention, support, and health education services within an intimate, patient-friendly atmosphere. That level of hands-on, quality-first thinking extends to the hospital’s engineering team, headed by Shannon Clifton, Engineering Supervisor. Recently, in an effort to maximize efficiencies, and continue to save more on the high cost of fuel, the hospital purchased its third Miura steam boiler. “We’ve had Miura boilers here for about three years,” Clifton states. “Our first two paid for themselves in about a year on fuel savings alone. These were EX-Series dual fuel 200BHP units. The third unit is an LX-Series gas-fired 100BHP unit.” The Miura boilers were purchased from Greensboro, NC-based Boiler Masters Inc, a recognized leader with over 60 years total experience in the industry. "We've been selling the Miura boilers for the past 11 years,” said the owners of Boiler Masters Inc., Bryan Spivey and Marlin Hargett, Jr. "It’s a remarkable company with a ‘state of the art’ boiler that is fuel efficient, low-maintenance and environmentally friendly." Clifton points out another unique advantage of Miura boilers, since his hospital is located in an area of the country that is experiencing drought conditions. “Right now North Carolina is in a drought situation,” Clifton continues. “I’m attending lots of meetings on what can be done about water conservation and Miura boilers, because they are so small and efficient, have really put us way ahead of everybody around town – and this industry – on water conservation. So you know that’s another plus for us.” The hospital uses the Miura boilers for steam autoclave (sterilization), hot water for cooking, dishwashing, and domestic hot water heating, and reheat (where the hot water is used for heating purposes). “They’re so efficient that we decided to purchase a third unit,” Clifton states. In terms of saving money, he reports that savings with the original two units were thousands of dollars per month. With the new unit, savings were even more. “We found the savings with Miura over our previously-owned fire tube boilers, from one month to the next, was at least a thousand Decatherms,” he says. “In fact, the lowest number I had was 1200 and the highest was about 1600. With the new unit, we found we saved another 100 to 200 Decatherms beyond that each month.” With results like that, Duke Raleigh Hospital is saving money, increasing energy efficiency, conserving natural resources, and doing its part for the environment. It has also made Shannon Clifton a big supporter of Miura boilers. “Excellent,” was his response when asked to rate Miura boilers. “I’m constantly getting phone calls from people across the nation because we are using the boilers in a hospital setting where there are different characteristics and/or uses. People want to know about different day-to-day questions like water treatment, and other questions. Since we work with Miura boilers on a day-to-day basis and we’re not sales people, we attract a good many questions.” All Miura boilers produce steam in about 5 minutes using their exclusive floating head design, a revolutionary advance that results in gas and oil savings of up to 20% on average. In a multiple installation (MI) Miura boilers can be turned on or off as needed, allowing Clifton to meet peak demand hours, while operating at greater efficiency throughout the day and reducing wear and tear. Miura boilers also require less space and feature an online maintenance system with a “sliding window feature” that records an event four seconds before it occurs, so it can be diagnosed and corrected faster. Overall, Clifton was very positive about working with Miura. “The efficiency is essential to meeting our needs, the fuel savings are important to our bottom line,” he notes. “Yes, I’d highly recommend Miura’s boilers.” |
